Tiali Releases ‘The Pleasure Pit’

Back in September, I did a little write-up on ‘Jigsaw’ by Tiali (read it HERE). Almost a year later and many releases, Tiali has been ever so kind as to share her debut EP ‘The Pleasure Pit’ with the world. As well as ‘Jigsaw’, ‘The Pleasure Pit’ features previous singles ‘Icicles’, ‘Medium’ and ‘What Kind Of Man’ as well as two new tracks ‘Love, Drugs & Toothpaste’ and ‘Glue’. There isn’t a dull moment on the EP. I promise.

To celebrate ‘The Pleasure Pits’ release, Tiali has taken the time to answer some questions we’ve all been dying to ask.

How would you describe ‘The Pleasure Pit’ in 3 words?

Chaotic, emotional, growth

What were some of your favourite moments while creating ‘Pleasure Pit’?

I mean, recording in the studio was a great time, I loved that. But I really enjoyed the visual aspects. Digging into that side of the creative process was out of my comfort zone and it’s amazing how much you can surprise yourself when you start to tap into those elements of yourself and flesh the ideas out. Filming the Love Drugs visualiser was super fun because I just got to dance around like the idiot that I am.

You’ve described the pleasure pit as a place we go to indulge and ease our pain. What can be found in your pleasure pit?

A lot of things. A lot of drugs, a lot of cigarettes, a lot of alcohol. Pure joy and euphoria, but bad comedowns and terrible anxiety. The deepest love and great sex, with some toxicity mixed in there. It was messy, but a fucking blast. Nowadays though, my pleasure comes a little more wholesome, I’ve been finding a lot of fulfilment in a home-cooked meal with my partner, cuddles from my dog, an ocean swim, and a campfire, but don’t get me wrong, we still play up when the moment calls.

You worked with Oscar Dawson from Holy Holy on ‘Pleasure Pit’. What was it like working with Oscar and what have you learnt from him that you’ll take into future projects?

Oscar is a legend! Such a warm, funny person. He creates such an easygoing environment and makes the process super comfortable. He really listens to the artist too, which is key. What sticks out to me most is learning to let the song be the guide, to serve the music and not get caught up in a genre or how it will be perceived. There were times when Oz would make a suggestion and I’d be hesitant, but it’s like, don’t judge something before you try it, and at the end of the day it’s about making the song as good as it can be, so ultimately it’s learning to surrender to that.

You’ve described your style as being influenced by grunge, blues, jazz, punk and psychedelica. Who are some of your major influences in each of these genres and why?

I mean, I think all of these just show up very subtly in moments. But, I used to love singing tunes by artists like Otis Redding, Etta James, Janis Joplin, because they’ve got such substance and power to their voices. PJ Harvey is a big one, as she tends to blend blues and punk in with alternative rock. Portishead, although they’re trip hop, a lot of jazz elements drive their music, and I’m addicted to that dark, seductive energy. Pixies, because, well, Pixies..they’re not straight punk, but some vocal inspo for Jigsaw. And Mazzy Star for psychedelia, for the wavy guitars and dream-like state that they put you in.

You’ve managed to support a few artists over the past year such as Eagle Eye Jones, The Buoys, Imogen Clark and Holy Holy. Who is an artist or band you would most like to support and why?

Oh geez, there’s so many. Radiohead is up there because they’re one of my favourite bands and I’ve also never seen them live.

You have a couple of shows coming up. What can you tell us about these shows?

Yes! First up I’ve got an event called ‘Necromancing and Dancing’ at Long Jetty Hotel, Cenny (Central) coast, on 9th Sept. They’ve lined up 13 acts throughout the night and they’re mostly heavy bands, so it’ll be a wild one. Then on 25th November we’ll be supporting Sunsoli at Drifters Wharf, Cenny coast. Tickets are available HERE.
