Q&A - Lilly Carron releases ‘Keeping Our Bodies Warm’

Last week, New Zealand singer-songwriter Lilly Carron released her new single ‘Keeping Our Bodies Warm’. To celebrate this track and her upcoming EP ‘And The Clouds Came Undone’ (out May 24th), Lilly was kind enough to answer a few questions for Be Groovy Or Leave.

Keeping Our Bodies Warm’ tells the story of a girl in love with the moon. What are three

things you love about the moon?

I used to love following the moon on big road trips, watching it move across the sky. Honestly as

a kid I thought the moon followed me around, before I had a grasp on basic science hahaha. I

also love that around a full moon my dreams get more vivid, crazy and nonsensical.

How would you describe ‘Keeping Our Bodies Warm’ in three words?

Whimsical. Storybook. Danceable maybe??

Who are some artists that you drew influence from for this song? And in what ways did

they inspire it?

I was listening to a lot of Kate Bush. I love the way she tells a story and was enamored by the

theatrics and whimsy in her vocals, I feel that influenced the end result of ‘Keeping Our Bodies

Warm’.

This track was produced by NZ duo Balu Brigada. What have they brought to your sound?

These two are wizards at their craft and saw so much potential in the demo I brought in, their

music has such vibrance and drive to it and I feel that it bled into this song. Giving it such life

and verve.

You have a new EP called ‘And The Clouds Came Undone’ coming out May 24th. What

can we expect from this release that we haven’t heard yet?

Hmmmm what’s left to come fits into the same sonic world as ‘Keeping Our Bodies Warm’ but

thematically is a calling into self after a period of feeling lost <3

‘Keeping Our Bodies Warm’ (and all the other tracks from the upcoming EP) has a more

developed sound in terms of production, songwriting and vocal performance as

compared to your 2020 EP ‘Messy Mind’. What steps have you taken to develop your

sound and artistry into what we’ve heard with these more recent releases.

I wrote a lot, and took what felt the strongest into the studio with Henry and Pierre to develop

further together. With a few exceptions like ‘Apricot Sun’ which I wrote in the studio with Henry

and ‘Hands’ with Tom Young. With this project I came in with a much clearer idea on what I

wanted it to sound like and what styles I would like to explore, and ‘Messy Minds’ felt like a

‘discover as I go’ sort of process as I was (and still am) learning what music I wanted to make.

Also working with Balu Brigada was amazing, they really pushed me to find new facets of my

voice. Creating an environment for me to try things out and make mistakes in order to get to

something new and refreshing.

What would you like to achieve from the release of this upcoming EP?

I would love to play more shows in New Zealand and overseas. Would be so cool to do

an opening tour with someone and really get a chance to develop my performance

artistry.
